Yale Dawson was a prolific phycologist, publishing many papers and writing extensively on the seaweeds of the Pacific Coast, including this textbook on marine botany. He also did many of his own illustrations and was intent on also writing for the casual visitor to the seaside, introducing the seaweeds to the general public. He died tragically of a diving accident in 1966.
